Frequently Asked Questions

ARE DOGS ALLOWED?

Yes, we welcome one well-behaved dog to join your stay free of charge and we provide a dog bed, blanket, and bowls. With coastal and beach walks right on your doorstep, it’s a great spot for your four-legged friend.

IS THERE A HOT-TUB?

Polhawn Lookout has a private outdoor heated bath tub with sea views. Unlike a traditional chemical hot tub, this is a bath-style tub designed for relaxation and stargazing.

CAN I PARK AT POLHAWN LOOKOUT?

Reaching us is a proper coastal experience. The path down to the deck is narrow in places and involves a steep walk, so please pack light.
You’ll have an allocated parking space nearby. Wedding guests at Polhawn Fort are welcome to use the offloading space for their stay. We’ll share the best way to load and offload in your welcome pack.

ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED?

Polhawn Lookout is designed as a retreat for adults. We only accept babies up to 6 months old (in arms). A travel cot is available for a small fee, and we ask that you bring your own towels and blankets.

CAN I ARRANGE FOR A EARLY CHECK-IN OR LATE CHECKOUT?

Yes. For an additional fee, you can choose to check in early at 2pm (usually 4pm), and check out by 12:00pm (usually 10:00am). This can be bought at the time of booking, or added later to your booking.

WHAT IS PROVIDED AND WHAT TO BRING?

We’ve stocked the Lookout so you don't have to. The kitchen is fully equipped for proper cooking, with a fridge, freezer box and every essential provided—from salt, pepper, and oil to the practicalities like dishwasher tablets, sponges, and washing-up liquid.

For your mornings, there is a Nespresso machine with pods and a milk frother, alongside fresh milk, tea, and biscuits.

In the bathroom, you'll find dressing robes, shampoo, and body wash, as well as complementary bubbles and salts for the bath tub. We’ve also tucked away a hairdryer, iron, yoga mats, and a selection of games.

As we are right on the cliff edge, we recommend bringing wellies or walking boots and a waterproof coat so you can explore the coast path comfortably, whatever the Cornish weather brings.

ARE THERE ANY EV CHARGERS NEARBY?

While we don’t have charging points directly at the Lookout, there are a few local options nearby. If you are part of a wedding party at Polhawn Fort, they have a couple of chargers available on-site for you to use.

Alternatively, you’ll find public charging points in the Cawsand car park, about a mile away. To use these, simply download the Swarco E.Connect app or scan the connector ID at the charger to pay via WebPay.

WHERE IS POLHAWN LOOKOUT LOCATED?

We’re perched on the cliffs of Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, just a short walk from Kingsand, Cawsand, and the Rame Peninsula. It’s a peaceful, rural location with incredible sea views and direct access to the South West Coast Path.

HOW FAR IS POLHAWN FORT?

We are just a two-minute walk from Polhawn Fort. Our entrance sits directly opposite, making it the perfect spot for wedding guests who want to wander home in moments.

As a guest of the Fort, you have the added privilege of being able to leave your car on the Fort's drive (offloading area) for the duration of your stay—literally steps from our coastal path.

HOW DO YOU CHECK-IN/OUT?

Your escape begins at 3pm, and we ask that you head off by 10am on your final day.

We will send you a full arrival guide closer to your stay with all the final details. As our Cornish country roads can be a little hidden, we recommend using the what3words address provided in your guide; we’ve found it’s the most reliable way to find your dedicated parking space and the start of the path.

DO YOU HAVE WIFI?

We have 4G Wi-Fi which is perfect for using the Smart TV. If you’re planning a movie night, please remember to bring your own login details for Netflix or other streaming apps.

While the phone signal is generally good, if you absolutely need to work during your stay, we recommend bringing a dongle just in case. However, our best advice is to leave the laptop closed, forget the workday, and simply enjoy making memories on the coast.

WHERE CAN I FIND A PROPER CORNISH PUB NEARBY?

We are just a mile from the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, where you’ll find some of our favourite local pubs like The Devonport Inn, The Halfway House, The Bay, The Cross Keys, and The Rising Sun. They are perfect for a relaxed pint, a Sunday roast, or a taste of the fresh local fish caught right in the bay.

ARE THE BEACHES DOG-FRIENDLY?

Yes, Whitsand Bay beach is dog-friendly all year round and offers four miles of sand at low tide. Please note that while neighboring Kingsand Beach allows dogs year-round, Cawsand Beach has seasonal restrictions during summer days.

WHERE CAN WE GO FOR A COFFEE AND A VIEW

A scenic 40-minute walk or a quick 6-minute drive along Military Road will take you to the Cliff Top Café. It’s a local gem known for its breakfast, crab sandwiches and panoramic views across the bay towards Looe.

HOW FAR ARE THE NEAREST VILLAGES?

Kingsand and Cawsand are about a mile away. It is a beautiful walk along the coast path or a quick drive down the lanes. The villages are full of history with narrow streets, small beaches, and plenty of places to find gifts, eat and drink.

IS THERE ANY PUBLIC TRANSPORT CLOSE BY?

The Rame Peninsula is well-connected by water and road. You can catch the Cawsand Ferry to Plymouth during the seasonal months between April and October. For year-round travel, the Cremyll Ferry and the Torpoint Ferry provide regular service across the water.

If you prefer the bus, you can catch the number 70 service from the top of the Polhawn Fort drive. These buses typically run every hour, but we recommend checking the Plymouth Citybus or Go Cornwall Bus timetables for the most up-to-date times.

ARE THERE ANY FOOD SHOPS CLOSE BY?

For a full food shop, there is a Sainsburys in Torpoint or a Lidl and Waitrose in Saltash. Closer to the Lookout, the village of Millbrook has a Co-op and a Spar that stay open until 10pm every day. For daily essentials like bread and milk, Kingsand also has some convenient local shops just a mile away.

THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH AND BEYOND

You can step straight from our gate onto the South West Coast Path for miles of spectacular scenery. A favourite walk is the loop out to Rame Head to see the medieval chapel and the wild landscape recently featured in the film The Salt Path.

Following the path the other way leads you through the historic Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. It is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon with formal gardens, a wilder deer park, and the orangery café. Within the park, you will also find The Farrier café for a break and Upcycled Home for unique gifts. At the far end of the park, you will find the Cremyll Ferry and the Edgcumbe Arms pub, both sitting right on the water's edge.
